To me, the best Metal band is DISSECTION, and many will probably agree with the brilliance of their last CD “Storm Of The Light’s Bane”. But when you think about it, although this album has been praised into infinity, there are hardly any bands that have been able to approach the quality, and even the style of music of the band. I could mention a few bands that come very close, being DAWN, MÖRK GRYNING (though they have moved to a more Avantgarde style now they are still fantastic) and maybe in a sense NAGLFAR. A band with the same potential also comes from Sweden, and is called SPAZMOSITY. Already in 1994 the band had its earliest incarnation, but years passed by before the first demos saw the light. Early this year the band released another demo with the title “Storm Metal” (I just realised how it suits what is said above), and I think the anonymous days of this band are over. This demo is unbelievable! “The Curse of Blood” is a DISSECTION-like partly acoustic intro, which then turns into a mix of DISSECTION, NAGLFAR and SOULREAPER in “Ocean of Flesh”. “Enter the Storm“ has more of the NAGLFAR touch to it, while “Purgatorio” is another fantastic blackened Death Metal song (which also reminds me of SETHERIAL a bit). Screams lead to a different effect than grunts do (screams sound colder, grunts sound darker), but both are perfectly suitable for the music of SPAZMOSITY, and they are both used (a bit more grunts). Listening to this CD I am just blown away every time I hear the songs! The song structures are incredibly mature, having a perfect balance between brutal parts, melodic riffs and slower sections. There are no real acoustic interludes in the music like DISSECTION, but still I would crown SPAZMOSITY as one of few bands to almost reach the immense quality of these Swedes. For a demo, but even for a normal release, the production is overwhelming: Dark, razor sharp and perfectly mixed. Blow yourself away and download the track, you won’t be disappointed! I am a bit hard-pressed to call this the demo of the year (especially considering I had another fantastic one in CURRICULUM MORTIS), so instead I’m going to say: Welcome to the new band in the group of DISSECTION, DAWN, MÖRK GRYNING and NAGLFAR. The label that isn’t signing this band is making a huge mistake. We will definitely hear much more of SPAZMOSITY in the future! |
